Build a Nest Box for Your Backyard

Saturday, June 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. SIGN UP by Friday, June 19, 2009.
Cost: Golden Gate Audubon members: $15 per box; non-members: $20. For an additional $10, we will provide a 5-foot pole to mount the box and send a knowledgeable Wildcare volunteer to mount and install the box in your backyard. Backyards and neighboring areas must be free and clear of pesticides, herbicides and outdoor cats. Homeowners also must agree to clean the box once a year. Monitoring nesting activity in springtime would be most helpful.

Golden Gate Audubon and Wildcare of Marin County are sponsoring a
Nest Box Building Workshop for:Western Chickadees, Tree Swallows, flycatchers, Western Bluebirds We will provide all materials (see below) and hands-on instruction in how to assemble nest boxes. No experience necessary! Participants may take their boxes home and place them in backyards, or they may donate boxes for placement in East Bay Regional Parks or other public parks.

This new class on bird behavior and physiology will focus on local nesting birds that are here in the summer. Presentations include colorful imagery and discussions of bonding, nesting and parenting behaviors of waterfowl, waders, raptors, shorebirds, hummers and songbirds. We'll also greet shorebirds returning from their northerly breeding grounds and have fun comparing birds in fresh juvenal plumages from adults in worn breeding plumages.
Note: one fieldtrip to Frank's dump includes a hike of about one mile each way on a flat path. The trip will be in the afternoon.
$80 fee (limit 20 students)

Wild Birds of San Francisco : An Introduction

Join a fun and enthusiastic group in an introduction to many of the amazing birds that inhabit the San Francisco Bay Area in summer, and discover their local habitats. Presentations include colorful bird imagery, information on optics and field guides, identification techniques and more
The first meeting will be at the main entrance to the Botanical Garden at 10 am on July 18.
$60 fee
Evening classes taught by Joe Morlan and endorsed by Golden Gate Audubon start in September. All classes meet 7–9:15 p.m. at Marina Middle School, 3500 Fillmore at Bay Street. Morlan is the coauthor of Birds of San Francisco and the Bay Area and Birds of Northern California. He is also coordinator of the recorded Northern California Birdbox sponsored by Golden Gate Audubon.
Field Ornithology I, a thorough introduction to birds and birding, meets on Tuesdays from September 15 to October 27. Field Ornithology II, an in-depth study of land birds including hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and flycatchers, meets on Wednesdays from September 16 to October 28. Field Ornithology III, covering ducks, grouse, quail, and other North American birds, meets on Thursdays from September 17 to October 29. Optional field trips are arranged on weekends.
