The Port of Oakland has approved construction of two trucking terminals at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Shoreline. These developments will have incredibly destructive impacts on the birds and wildlife at the shoreline--one of the most successful wetland restoration projects in the Central Bay. Help us to stop them!
Email the Port of Oakland commissioners and tell than that you do not want trucking terminals adjacent to important wildlife habitat and near one of the underserved East Oakland community's few open spaces. Ask the port to protect the environment by only approving developments which do not harm birds and wildlife. You can also call them at 510.627.1100 to help stop these projects.
Governor Schwarzenegger's FY 08-09 state budget proposes to close 48 state parks. The list includes Candlestick Point State Recreation Area, one of the very few open spaces in the Bayview/Hunter's Point neighborhood of San Francisco and a critical wetland and wildlife habitat. Candlestick is currently in the midst of a multi-year remediation and restoration project addressing acute contamination from industrial and military pollution. Golden Gate Audubon has active partnerships in the area with Literacy for Environmental Justice. Their Native Plants Nursery at Candlestick trains youth interns from Bayview/Hunter's Point to grow the native plantstock for the Candlestick wetland restoration project and many of the plants used for GGA's Pier 94 wetland restoration project. Closing the park throws the future of the remediation project as a whole into doubt. We urge you to find out more at http://www.calparks.org and write to your legislators. You can also download a petition to gather signatures to help save Candlestick Point and send it to LEJ. Contact Eli Saddler at esaddler@goldengateaudubon.org or LEJ at http://www.lejyouth.org for more information.
In February, voters in San Francisco overwhelmingly approved additional funding for the city's Natural Areas Program with 72 percent of the vots. However, the NAP struggles with only six gardeners--just two percent of the gardening staff with one percent of the parks budget--who are responsible for 27 percent of the city's parklands.
Email Mayor Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Commission to express your support for the NAP. Ask them to increase gardening staff so that we can protect the city's natural heritage. You can also call the mayor at 415.554.6141 or FAX him at 415.554.6160. Call the commission at 415.831.2750 or FAX them at 415.221.8034.
Golden Gate Audubon would like to extent a heartfelt thank you to all volunteers of the oil spill! Since the Cosco Busan oil spill on November 7, GGA volunteers and staff have been working to help save oiled birds. Groups have been monitoring the shoreline of San Francisco and the East Bay for injured birds, driving them to rescue centers, and HazMat trained volunteers have been on-call to pick up deceased birds. Oiled bird sightings are decreasing; therefore, monitoring activities are coming to a close.
